What is Color Match

A color matching game that trains your eye

Color Match is a single-player perception game. A target color appears, and you pick the one swatch in the grid that matches it exactly before the round timer runs out. Correct picks build a streak multiplier and push the difficulty up; a wrong pick or a timeout costs a life. It is quick to learn, hard to master, and different every round.

One exact match
Every round hides a single perfect match in a grid of near-identical decoys. Find it fast — the speed bonus rewards a confident eye.
Plays in your browser
No download, no install, no plugins. playcolormatch.app loads a board the moment the page opens, on desktop and mobile.
A difficulty that adapts
Each correct pick tightens the decoys, grows the grid, and shortens the clock. The game keeps pace with your eye until it does not.
Progress saved locally
Best score, best level, and best streak are stored on your device — never on a server, no account required.

How to play

How to play Color Match

Read the target color, scan the grid for its exact twin, and lock in your pick before the timer empties. Keep the streak alive and the score multiplies.

  1. 1

    Read the target

Every round opens with one target color shown large at the top of the board, with its hex code beside it. Take a beat to read it — is it warm or cool, light or deep, vivid or muted? That first impression is what you will match against.

  2. 2

    Scan the grid

Below the target sits a grid of swatches. Exactly one is an identical match; the rest are near-misses nudged slightly in hue, saturation, or lightness. Sweep the grid in a fixed order rather than jumping around, and rule out the obvious misses first.

  3. 3

    Pick before the timer

A bar across the top drains through the round. Tap or click the swatch you believe is the exact match before it empties. A faster correct pick scores a bigger speed bonus, but a wrong pick or a timeout costs a life.

  4. 4

    Build a streak and climb

Each correct pick raises the level: decoys move closer to the target, the grid adds more swatches, and the clock gets shorter. Consecutive correct picks build a streak that multiplies your score up to three times. Three lives; the run ends when they are gone.

Tips for a sharper eye

  • Judge hue first — is it red, orange, green, blue? — then narrow by lightness, then by saturation. Most decoys miss on exactly one of those three.
  • Scan the grid in the same order every round, left to right and top to bottom, so your eye never skips a swatch under time pressure.
  • Trust your first read. The match you spot in the first second is usually right; second-guessing burns the clock and the speed bonus with it.
  • Look slightly away from a swatch rather than straight at it. Peripheral vision is better at spotting a small color difference than a hard stare.
  • Turn your screen brightness up and kill any blue-light or night filter. A warm screen tint quietly ruins fine hue judgements.
  • Protect your streak. At a five-streak your multiplier is 1.5×, and every pick after that is worth far more — a careless miss there is expensive.
  • On the sixteen-swatch grids, cover half the board with your hand or your eyes and compare within each half. Fewer swatches at once is easier to hold.

FAQ

Color Match, answered

Straight answers about the free color matching game you can play online in your browser.

What is Color Match?

Color Match is a single-player color matching game that tests how finely you can tell two shades apart. Each round shows one target color and a grid of swatches; exactly one swatch is an identical match and the rest are close decoys. You tap the match before the round timer runs out. Correct picks score points and raise the difficulty; a wrong pick or a timeout costs one of your three lives.

Is Color Match free to play online?

Yes. playcolormatch.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and a board is ready.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app-store download and no sign-up. Your best score, best level, and best streak are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

How do you play Color Match?

Look at the target color at the top of the board, then scan the grid of swatches below it for the one that is an exact match. Tap or click that swatch before the timer bar empties. A faster correct pick earns a larger speed bonus. Every correct pick advances the level, so the decoys get closer to the target, the grid grows, and the clock shortens. Miss — by picking wrong or running out of time — and you lose a life. The run ends when all three lives are gone.

How does scoring work?

A correct pick scores a flat 100 points, plus a speed bonus based on how much time was left on the round clock, plus a small level bonus that grows as you climb. That subtotal is multiplied by your streak multiplier: it starts at 1×, rises to 1.5× once you reach a five-pick streak, and caps at 3×. A wrong pick or a timeout scores nothing and resets the multiplier to 1×.

How many lives do I get?

Three. Each wrong pick or expired round timer costs one life. There is no way to earn lives back within a run, so the game is about how long you can keep your eye sharp as the differences shrink. When the third life is gone the run is over and your score is final.

How does the difficulty increase?

The level goes up by one with every correct pick. Three things change as the level rises: the decoy swatches are generated closer to the target color, the grid holds more swatches (six early on, then nine, twelve, and a maximum of sixteen), and the round timer gets shorter — from around eight seconds down to a floor near three and a half.

Does my screen or monitor matter?

Yes, a lot, especially at higher levels where decoys are only a few perceptual steps from the target. Turn brightness up, disable night mode and any warm or blue-light filter, and avoid direct glare on the screen. A consistent, uncalibrated tint shifts every swatch the same way and makes near-misses look identical to the target.

How do I get better at color matching?

Judge one property at a time: identify the hue family first, then compare lightness, then saturation — most decoys are wrong on exactly one of those. Scan the grid in a fixed order so you never skip a swatch, and trust the match you spot in the first second rather than second-guessing. Playing regularly genuinely sharpens color discrimination; the game is used by some designers and developers as a quick eye-training drill.

What is the best way to run up a high score?

Protect your streak. The multiplier is where big scores come from — every pick past a five-streak is worth 1.5× to 3× a base pick — so a single careless miss is far more costly than a slightly slower pick. Play quickly enough to bank the speed bonus, but never so fast that you throw the multiplier away.

Does the game save my progress?

Your best score, best level reached, best streak, and total games played are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start. A run in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Can I play Color Match on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: the target color and the full swatch grid fit on one portrait screen, the swatches are large tap targets, and starting a new run is instant with no page reload. It plays well on both phones and tablets.

Is Color Match accessible if I am color blind?

The core task is telling two colors apart, so color vision deficiency does make the higher levels harder. Every swatch has an aria-label and the game is fully keyboard operable, but there is no mode that removes the color-discrimination challenge itself. The target hex code is always shown, which can help you reason about a match analytically.
